It was 2002 and my husband and I decided to build our dream home in Jefferson, South Dakota. Building a new home means an overwhelming amount of decisions and planning not to mention the added financial stress. Between his demanding career and my acceptance to graduate school, I knew we needed a professional designer.
At this point, my life took an interesting turn: I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with a talented, down-to-earth, kind and loving woman, Patty Thompson. She was a professional designer on paper, but became so much more as we worked together.
Patty held my hand through numerous design decisions. And I’m pretty certain “marriage counseling” was also an expertise! I realized how much I loved watching and participating in the process of making blueprints a reality.
One day, on our way to a furniture store, I asked Patty what it was like to be an interior designer for a living. I heard both the pros and cons of daily life as a designer — talk about honesty! But, “When you know what you love, you just know,” Patty said. So I told her I loved interior design, and Patty inspired me to make it happen.
With her encouragement and my husband’s unending patience, today I am an interior designer. It’s one of the best choices I have ever made!
